Common Questions
Questions About Importing from India to Canada
No. The research and planning pathway applies to importing commercial goods into Canada generally. The supplier examples and sourcing guidance focus on India, but the tools—product check, landed cost, CARM steps and shipment planning—work for any country of origin.
No. The Product Check is an educational research starting point that flags likely regulators, restrictions and questions to investigate. It does not provide a binding admissibility decision. Confirm requirements with the CBSA, the relevant regulator, or a licensed customs broker before ordering.
Duty depends on the product’s HS classification, its country of origin and the tariff treatment that applies. As of August 2026 there is no comprehensive Canada–India free trade agreement in force. Confirm the exact classification and rate using the CBSA Customs Tariff or a licensed customs broker before ordering.
You are not legally required to use one. Most first-time commercial importers do, because a broker handles classification, CARM and entry filing, and communication with the CBSA. You can self-clear, but it requires more time and knowledge.
CARM is the CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management system for managing duties and taxes on commercial imports. Commercial importers generally need a CARM Client Portal account, along with a business number and an RM import account. See the CARM for Small Importers guide for details.
Confirm the supplier’s identity and business details, review samples and written specifications, agree on Incoterms and payment terms, and get the full quotation and required documents in writing. Use safer payment methods. The Supplier Vetting Guide and Supplier Quote Checker walk through this.
